U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Mick Mulvaney, current director of the federal government’s Office of Management and Budget, will take over as his acting chief of staff after the departure of John Kelly at the end of the year.
Trump tweeted the news Friday afternoon, adding that Kelly “has served our Country with distinction.” He announced last week that Kelly will depart the White House at the end of the year.
On Tuesday, Trump’s top pick for the job, Nick Ayers, declined the chief of staff position.
Ayers has been serving as chief of staff for Vice President Mike Pence. Ayers reportedly did not want to commit to the job for more than a few months, while Trump seeks someone who would commit for at least two years.
