The gunman who allegedly opened fire at a Congressional Republican baseball practice on Wednesday was a harsh critic of President Donald Trump, according to social media postings, and a former campaign volunteer for Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois wounded four people, including Congressman Steve Scalise, two U.S. Capitol Police officers, and a congressional staff member, in the early morning shooting in Alexandria, Virginia. He died of his injuries, according to President Donald Trump.

Hodgkinson, who ran a home inspection business, has a police record. He was arrested for domestic battery in 2006, according to public records. He also appears to have been an active supporter of Sanders’ failed presidential campaign.

In a statement from the Senate floor, Senator Sanders said he was informed that Hodgkinson is “someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign.”

“I am sickened by this act,” Sanders said. “And let me be as clear as I can be. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms.”

Two Facebook profiles allegedly belonging to Hodgkinson were filled with passionate and sometimes angry political posts. The profile picture for one of the accounts depicts Sanders as Uncle Sam. The other says: “Democratic socialism explained in three words: We the people.”

On a near daily basis, the Facebook accounts criticized Trump, often in vulgar terms.

“Trump is Guilty & Should Go to Prison for Treason,” reads one of the posts on Hodgkinson’s page from earlier this month.

In some of the posts, Hodgkinson was also critical of Hillary Clinton.

After it emerged that law enforcement officials believe Hodgkinson was the shooter, the Facebook profiles were converted to a impromptu space for political arguments.
